BY TRADITION, THE FIRST BARREL OF MAIBOCK IS TAPPED AT THE HOFBRÄUHAUS IN THE LAST WEEK OF APRIL, IN TIME FOR THE MERRY MONTH OF MAY. THE SUCCESS STORY OF MUNICH’S OLDEST BOCK BEER GOES BACK AS FAR AS 1614.  HOFBRÄU MAIBOCK HAS THE LONGEST PEDIGREE OF ALL MUNICH’S BOCKS. ITS AROMATIC FLAVOR AND ALCOHOLIC CONTENT OF APPROXIMATELY 7.2% BY VOLUME MAKES IT ONE OF THE BEST CREATIONS FROM HOFBRÄU’S BREWING KETTLES.

VERBOTEN BREWING - Hop Crush IPA

VERBOTEN BREWING DERIVES ITS NAME FROM THE "FORBIDDEN" INGREDIENTS THAT WERE REJECTED BY THE GERMAN PURITY LAW FOR BEER, THE REINHEITSGEBOT. UNDER THE PURITY LAW, BEERS COULD ONLY BE MADE WITH THREE INGREDIENTS: BARLEY, WATER AND HOPS. YEAST, ONCE ITS FERMENTATION PROPERTIES WERE CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD, WAS ADDED LATER. THE TAVERN CHOSE VERBOTEN FOR THE IPA OPTION THIS OKTOBERFEST PURELY BECAUSE AN IPA IS NOT A GREMAN STYLE BEER. HOP CRUSH IS A NEW ENGLAND/VERMONT STYLE IPA THAT IS MADE USING A HOPPING TECHNIQUE OF ADDING MOST OF THE HOP ADDITIONS, OF TROPICAL VARIETIES, AFTER THE BOIL DURING A LONG PERIOD IN WHICH THE BEER IS WHIRLPOOLED. DRY HOPPED ONCE DURING FERMENTATION AND ONCE AFTER, THIS BEER IS CLOUDY DUE TO THE HAZE ALL THESE LATE HOPS GIVE IT.

WILEY ROOTS BREWING COMPANY - Fest Bier MÄRZEN

MÄRZEN (OR ALTERNATIVELY MAERZEN) HAS ITS ORIGINS IN BAVARIA, PROBABLY BEFORE THE 16TH CENTURY. A BAVARIAN BREWING ORDINANCE DECREED IN 1553 THAT BEER MAY BE BREWED ONLY BETWEEN 29 SEPTEMBER AND 23 APRIL. THE MÄRZEN WAS BREWED IN MARCH (MÄRZ IN GERMAN IS "MARCH") ACCORDING TO A SPECIAL RECIPE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE BEER TO LAST WHILE THE BREWING OF NEW BEER WAS FORBIDDEN BETWEEN 24 APRIL AND 28 SEPTEMBER. THE ORIGINAL MÄRZEN WAS DESCRIBED AS "DARK BROWN, FULL-BODIED, AND BITTER". THE BEER WAS OFTEN KEPT IN THE CELLAR UNTIL LATE IN THE SUMMER, AND REMAINING BOTTLES WERE SERVED AT THE OKTOBERFEST, THUS CREATING THE TRADITIONAL STYLE SERVED FOR OKTOBERFEST NOW THAT THEY CAN BREW YEAR AROUND. WILEY'S HAS CREATED THEIR VERSION OF THE MÄRZEN OKTOBERFEST.
